Pinewood Allotment Society — Plot Rules
Passage
A Pinewood Allotment Society manages forty-two plots on council-owned land, let to members on an annual tenancy running from 1 October to 30 September, renewable each year provided the rent is paid and the plot has been reasonably cultivated over the previous season. Annual rent is £45 for a full plot and £25 for a half plot, due by 1 November; rent unpaid by 1 December results in the tenancy being offered to the next name on the waiting list. B New tenants have a three-month grace period after taking on a plot during which cultivation standards are not assessed, recognising that a neglected plot often needs significant initial work before anything can be planted. After this period, at least 75% of a plot must show visible signs of cultivation at any committee inspection, which are carried out twice a year, in May and September, with advance notice given by newsletter rather than to individual tenants. C Sheds and greenhouses may be erected without formal permission provided they do not exceed 2.5 metres in height and are positioned at least half a metre from any neighbouring plot's boundary; anything larger requires written approval from the committee, which meets monthly and aims to respond to a request within two weeks. Bonfires are permitted only on a tenant's own plot, only for diseased plant material that cannot be composted, and never on a day when a strong wind would carry smoke over neighbouring plots or the adjacent housing estate. D Water is available from four standpipes across the site between April and October, included in the annual rent; hosepipes are not permitted at any standpipe during a declared regional hose-pipe ban, and tenants are asked to use a watering can during any dry spell even before an official ban is declared, as a courtesy to plots further from a standpipe. The site has no water supply between November and March, when pipes are drained to prevent frost damage. E A tenant who wishes to give up a plot must give the secretary at least one month's written notice and leave the plot in a reasonably cultivated, rubbish-free condition; a plot abandoned without notice, or left in poor condition, may result in the former tenant being refused a plot in future at the committee's discretion.
