Meadowbank Wildlife Centre — Volunteering Information

Passage

A Meadowbank Wildlife Centre relies on volunteers for much of its day-to-day work, and welcomes applications from anyone aged sixteen or over with a genuine interest in animal welfare; no previous experience is required, since full training is provided for every role. Volunteers commit to a minimum of one four-hour shift per week for at least three months, a requirement introduced after the centre found that shorter placements left too little time to properly train someone before they moved on. B Four main volunteer roles are available. Animal care volunteers assist keepers with feeding, cleaning enclosures and basic health monitoring, and must complete a two-day induction before starting. Visitor guides lead tours and answer questions in the public areas, and need no induction beyond a single afternoon of training, since they do not have direct contact with the animals. Fundraising volunteers help run the gift shop and organise events, and can start immediately after a short online induction. Rescue-line volunteers answer the centre's phone line for injured wildlife and are the most experienced role, open only to volunteers who have completed at least six months in another role first. C Volunteers under eighteen may only take the visitor guide or fundraising roles, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for their first two shifts. All volunteers, regardless of age, must complete a basic safeguarding course before their first shift, delivered online and taking around forty minutes. D Shifts are booked through the volunteer portal up to four weeks in advance, and a volunteer who cancels with less than 48 hours' notice more than twice in a year may be asked to take a break from the rota. Travel expenses are not paid, but volunteers on a full shift receive a free hot drink and lunch in the staff room, and a 20% discount in the gift shop at all times, whether on shift or not. E Applications are accepted year-round, though the centre particularly needs more animal care volunteers between March and August, when the number of rescued young animals arriving at the centre rises sharply. A completed application form, available on the website, is usually processed within two weeks, followed by an informal chat with the volunteer coordinator before a start date is confirmed.
