A Welcome to Meadow Vale Primary School. This handbook is for supply teachers booked through the school directly rather than through an agency, and covers what agency-booked staff are given separately by their agency. On arrival, report to the school office first, not the classroom, to sign in and collect a visitor lanyard and the day's cover folder, which contains the class's usual routines, the seating plan, and any medical or behavioural information you need to know. B The cover folder is prepared by the class teacher or, if they are absent unexpectedly, by the phase leader, and should include a lesson plan for every subject taught that day. If no plan has been left for a particular lesson, do not simply invent one; the class teaching assistant, where the class has one, will know the class's current topic and can help you adapt the nearest available resource. C Meadow Vale operates a strict two-adult rule for any one-to-one interaction with a pupil, including comforting an upset child; a supply teacher should ask a teaching assistant or another member of staff to remain present, or move the conversation to a corridor or doorway within sight of another adult. This is not a reflection on supply staff specifically — the same rule applies to permanent staff. D Fire drills are unannounced and can happen on any day; the fire evacuation plan is pinned inside the cover folder and also on the classroom door, and a supply teacher's first task on entering any classroom should be to locate it before the lesson begins. In a real evacuation, supply teachers take the register with them and take the class to the designated assembly point on the playground, calling the register once there. E Payment for directly booked supply days is processed through the school's own payroll rather than an agency, and requires a completed timesheet, signed by the school office before you leave for the day, to be submitted within five working days of the placement. Timesheets submitted later than this may be delayed to the following month's payroll run rather than being paid immediately.
