A The figure most often quoted about ocean plastic — that by 2050 the sea will hold more plastic than fish by weight — comes from a single 2016 report and rests on assumptions its own authors described as illustrative. It has since been repeated in thousands of articles as established fact. This matters beyond pedantry, because the genuine findings are alarming enough without embellishment, and a claim that collapses under scrutiny gives those who would rather do nothing something convenient to attack. B What is reasonably well established is the quantity. Somewhere between eight and twelve million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean annually, most of it from land rather than from ships. A small number of rivers carry a disproportionate share: modelling published in 2021 attributed roughly eighty per cent of riverine input to about a thousand rivers, concentrated in regions where plastic consumption has risen faster than waste collection infrastructure. That concentration is the most actionable fact in the field, since it identifies where intervention would achieve most. C Plastic in seawater does not biodegrade in any useful sense. Ultraviolet light and mechanical action break items into progressively smaller fragments, and below five millimetres these are classed as microplastics. A significant proportion never came from larger objects at all: synthetic fibres shed during clothes washing, and particles abraded from vehicle tyres, are now thought to be among the largest single sources. Both bypass conventional litter policy entirely, which is aimed at objects people can see and choose to drop. D The biological harm is documented but uneven. Entanglement in discarded fishing gear kills large animals reliably and visibly. Ingestion is more ambiguous: seabirds and turtles that fill their stomachs with fragments do suffer, but establishing population-level effects has proved difficult, and researchers are divided over how much the microplastics now found in almost every marine organism actually damage them. Honest accounts distinguish between what is measured and what is inferred. E The response that attracts most attention is open-ocean collection. Floating barriers designed to gather waste from the North Pacific accumulation zone have removed thousands of tonnes and generated considerable publicity. Oceanographers have been notably cooler about them, on three grounds: the collected mass is small against annual input, the accumulation zones contain mostly weathered fragments rather than recoverable objects, and the barriers inevitably capture the surface-dwelling organisms that live in exactly those waters. F Interventions closer to source attract less attention and better evidence. River interception devices catch waste while it is still concentrated. Charges on single-use bags have produced sharp and durable falls in consumption wherever they have been properly enforced. Extended producer responsibility schemes, which oblige manufacturers to fund the collection of their own packaging, shift the cost onto the party able to redesign the product. None of these makes a compelling photograph. G The uncomfortable conclusion is that the problem is one of waste management rather than of the ocean. Plastic reaching the sea is a symptom of collection systems that do not exist or do not function, mostly in countries whose consumption grew faster than their infrastructure. Cleaning what has already escaped is worth doing at the margin. Preventing the next decade's escape is worth considerably more, and is a duller undertaking involving bin lorries, landfill standards and product design rather than ships and barriers. H Public attention has concentrated overwhelmingly on visible macroplastic — bottles, bags, fishing gear — because it photographs well and because beach clean-ups give volunteers something tangible to do. Microplastic, fragments under five millimetres across, attracts far less public concern despite mounting evidence that it is both more pervasive and harder to address. It has been found in Arctic sea ice, in agricultural soil, in drinking water and in human blood and placental tissue, though the health consequences of that presence remain genuinely uncertain rather than established; toxicology at this scale is difficult, and alarming headlines have sometimes outrun the underlying research. A significant source is not consumer waste at all but the ordinary wear of tyres and synthetic textiles, releasing particles continuously rather than through a single visible act of littering, which makes it far less amenable to the clean-up model that dominates public engagement with plastic pollution. A beach clean-up removes what can be seen and photographed. It does almost nothing about what cannot be, which may turn out to be the larger problem.
