New Starter Handbook — Meridian Logistics
Passage
A Welcome to Meridian Logistics. This handbook covers the policies that apply during your first three months, known as the probationary period, and the rules that continue afterwards. Your line manager will also give you a short site induction on your first day, covering fire exits, first aid points and the location of the staff canteen; you must complete this before starting your first shift. B New staff are employed on a four-week rolling shift pattern: two weeks of early shifts (6am–2pm), one week of late shifts (2pm–10pm), and one week of night shifts (10pm–6am). Shift patterns are published on the staff noticeboard and the internal app two weeks in advance. Swapping a shift with a colleague is permitted but must be approved by your supervisor at least 48 hours beforehand; swaps arranged without approval will not be paid. C During the probationary period, holiday requests must be submitted at least two weeks in advance and are granted at the supervisor's discretion, since cover during this period is limited. After probation is successfully completed, the standard notice period for holiday requests drops to five working days. Sick leave, unlike holiday, does not require advance notice, but staff must call the shift supervisor — not send a text or email — at least one hour before their shift is due to start. D Safety boots and a hi-visibility vest are provided free of charge on your first day and must be worn at all times on the warehouse floor; failure to wear them is treated as a safety breach and can result in being sent home without pay for that shift. Steel-toe boots are reissued once a year, or sooner if damaged, on request to your supervisor. Personal headphones are not permitted on the warehouse floor, though they may be used in the staff canteen and rest areas. E Performance during the probationary period is reviewed at six weeks and again at eleven weeks. A member of staff who does not meet the required standard at the eleven-week review may have their probation extended by up to four weeks rather than being dismissed outright, provided their supervisor believes the standard is achievable. Confirmed members of staff — those who have completed probation — are entitled to the full company sick pay scheme; staff still in probation receive statutory sick pay only.
