Bright Smile Dental Practice — New Hygienist Handbook

Passage

A Welcome to Bright Smile Dental Practice. As a dental hygienist, this handbook covers the practical procedures specific to this practice; your clinical training and registration with the General Dental Council are assumed and not covered here. Appointments are booked in thirty-minute slots for a routine scale and polish, and sixty-minute slots for a new patient's first hygiene appointment, which includes a fuller assessment. B Sterilisation of instruments follows a strict colour-coded tray system: instruments used on a patient are placed in a red tray immediately after use, never left loose on the surface, and a red tray is never returned to general storage until it has been through the full sterilisation cycle and moved to a blue tray, which indicates it is ready for reuse. Mixing instruments between a red and blue tray, even briefly, is treated as a serious breach of infection control regardless of intention. C Patients on blood-thinning medication or with a relevant heart condition must have this confirmed and recorded before any procedure involving the gums, even a routine scale and polish, since these patients face a materially higher bleeding risk that changes how a hygienist should proceed; if this information is not already recorded from a previous visit, it must be confirmed verbally at the start of the appointment and logged, not assumed to be unchanged from the patient's file. D X-rays are taken only on the instruction of a dentist, never independently ordered by a hygienist regardless of what seems clinically sensible, and a hygienist noticing something that may warrant an X-ray during a routine appointment should flag it to the dentist for a decision rather than requesting one directly. Every X-ray taken must be logged against the practice's annual radiation dose record, which is reviewed externally once a year as part of the practice's regulatory compliance. E Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, and patients who fail to attend without any notice at all, are recorded on the patient's file; a third such occurrence within any twelve-month period results in the patient being asked to pay a deposit for any future booking, refundable only if they attend, a policy applied consistently regardless of how loyal or longstanding a patient otherwise is.
